When I was a kid, my mama used to tell me stories about her life before she had me. She told me about the time she hitchhiked across the country, the time she won a beauty pageant, and the time she got into a bar fight with a man twice her size. But one of my favorite stories was the one about the time she dressed up as a man and joined the army.
Mama was always a tomboy, so it wasn’t much of a stretch for her to pass herself off as a man. She cut her hair short, put on a pair of overalls, and changed her name to “Joe.” She enlisted in the army and served for two years before her secret was discovered. But even though she was discharged, Mama never stopped being a soldier. She always had a strong sense of duty and a fierce determination to succeed.
I’m so proud of the woman my mama is. She’s taught me so much about life, and I’m grateful for every day I have with her. This is a portrait of my mama as a young man, a time when she was full of hope and promise, and when she set out to change the world.
