A Gothic Retelling of Little Red Riding Hood

When I was a child, I loved the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The innocent young girl, the evil wolf, the heroic hunterit was a classic fairy tale with all the elements I craved: danger, adventure, and a happy ending. But as I got older, I began to see that there was more to the story than met the eye.

The original version of Little Red Riding Hood, written by Charles Perrault in 1697, is much darker and more violent than the sanitized versions we’re familiar with today. In Perrault’s tale, the wolf not only eats Little Red Riding Hood, but he also eats her grandmother. And the hunter who comes to her rescue doesn’t save herhe simply cuts open the wolf’s stomach and finds her inside, still alive.

This darker, more realistic version of the story is what inspired me to write my own Gothic retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. In my version, the wolf is a creature of pure evil, and Little Red Riding Hood is a strong and resourceful young woman who must use all her wits to survive.
